Homemade Hemp Seed Butter

Homemade hemp seed butter, a hemp version of peanut or almond butter. Spreadable, rich, slightly grassy. Good on toast, in smoothies, blended into sauces.

Homemade Hemp Seed Butter

Yields about 1 cup. Prep 15 minutes.

Ingredients

  • 2 cups hemp hearts
  • 2 tablespoons hemp seed oil or neutral oil (helps texture)
  • 1/2 teaspoon salt
  • Optional: 1 tablespoon maple syrup; 1 teaspoon vanilla; 1 tablespoon cocoa

Method

  1. Spread hemp hearts on a sheet pan. Toast at 150°C for 8 minutes, stirring once. Do not let them darken; you want them warm and aromatic.
  2. Transfer warm hemp hearts to a food processor. Process 5-8 minutes total, stopping every 90 seconds to scrape down sides. The mixture goes through stages: crumbly, paste-like, then loose and pourable.
  3. Add oil and salt midway through. Add sweetener or cocoa at the end if using.
  4. Transfer to a jar. Keeps refrigerated 3 weeks. Oil may separate; stir before use.
