Homemade hemp milk takes three minutes and a blender, no straining required if you have a good machine. It costs roughly half what a carton of commercial hemp milk costs and tastes noticeably fresher.
Homemade Hemp Milk
Yields about 1 litre. Prep 3 minutes.
Ingredients
- 1/2 cup hemp hearts
- 4 cups filtered water
- 1-2 tablespoons maple syrup (optional)
- 1 teaspoon vanilla extract (optional)
- Pinch of salt
- 1 pitted Medjool date (optional, for richer sweetness)
Method
- Combine everything in a high-speed blender.
- Blend on high for 60-90 seconds. The mixture should look creamy and pale.
- For ultra-smooth milk, strain through a nut milk bag or fine cheesecloth. For everyday use, skip straining; the slight texture is fine in cereal, smoothies, and coffee.
- Store in a sealed bottle in the fridge for up to 4 days. Shake before each use.
Why this works
Unlike almond milk, hemp hearts are soft and blend completely; there is no pulp to strain unless you want it perfectly smooth. The fat content of hemp gives the milk body that other plant milks often lack.
Flavoured variations
- Chocolate: add 2 tablespoons cocoa powder and increase maple syrup to 3 tablespoons.
- Strawberry: add 1 cup frozen strawberries.
- Coffee creamer: reduce water to 3 cups for a richer milk; add 1 teaspoon vanilla and 1 tablespoon maple.
