A creamy, plant-based smoothie that uses hemp protein powder and hemp hearts to deliver approximately 35 grams of complete protein. Suitable for post-workout recovery or as a meal replacement on busy mornings.
Hemp Protein Smoothie
Yields 1 large smoothie. Prep time 5 minutes.
Ingredients
- 1 medium banana, frozen (sliced before freezing)
- 1 scoop (30 g) hemp protein powder
- 2 tablespoons hemp hearts
- 1 tablespoon almond butter or peanut butter
- 1 cup unsweetened milk of choice (almond, soy, oat, dairy)
- 1/2 cup ice cubes
- 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
- 1 teaspoon honey, maple syrup, or stevia (optional)
- 1 cup baby spinach (optional, for added nutrients)
Method
- Add the milk to the blender first (helps the blade work efficiently).
- Add the frozen banana, hemp protein, hemp hearts, almond butter, vanilla, and sweetener if using.
- If using spinach, add it now.
- Add ice cubes last.
- Blend on high speed for 45 to 60 seconds until completely smooth.
- If too thick, add more milk a tablespoon at a time. If too thin, add more ice or another half banana.
- Pour and serve immediately. Texture is best fresh.
Nutrition per serving
Approximately 450 calories, 35 grams protein, 18 grams fat, 38 grams carbohydrate, 9 grams fibre. Macronutrients vary based on choice of milk and added sweetener.
Variations
- Berry smoothie: replace banana with 1 cup frozen mixed berries; add an extra teaspoon of honey.
- Chocolate: add 1 tablespoon cocoa powder and a pinch of salt; reduce honey by half.
- Green: increase spinach to 2 cups, add 1/4 of an avocado, juice of half a lemon.
- Recovery (post-workout): add 1/2 cup oats (raw) for extra carbohydrate; useful within an hour after intense training.
- Coffee smoothie: use 1/2 cup cold brew coffee in place of half the milk; chocolate flavour pairs well.
Storage
Best consumed immediately. If you must store, refrigerate in a sealed jar for up to 4 hours. Hemp protein powder tends to separate from the liquid over time; stir or re-blend before drinking. The smoothie thickens noticeably as it sits.
