A turmeric latte built on hemp milk. The black pepper is not optional; it makes the curcumin in turmeric significantly more absorbable. Calming, anti-inflammatory, ideal before bed.
Hemp Golden Milk Latte
Yields 1 large mug. Prep 5 minutes.
Ingredients
- 1 1/2 cups hemp milk (homemade or store-bought)
- 1 teaspoon ground turmeric
- 1/4 teaspoon ground ginger (or 1 teaspoon fresh grated)
- 1/4 teaspoon ground cinnamon
- 1/8 teaspoon ground black pepper
- 1 teaspoon honey or maple syrup
- 1/2 teaspoon coconut oil or ghee
- Optional: pinch of cardamom or cayenne
Method
- Whisk hemp milk and all spices in a small saucepan over medium heat.
- Heat until steaming but not boiling, about 3 minutes.
- Whisk in honey and coconut oil.
- Pour into a mug. Dust with extra cinnamon.
Notes
The black pepper increases curcumin bioavailability roughly 20-fold (the piperine inhibits hepatic and intestinal glucuronidation, per the often-cited 1998 Shoba study). Without pepper, most of the turmeric is excreted unchanged.
